From Brines to Breads: A Fermentation Workshop

Join Maine Ferments Board Member Ellie Markovitch at MOFGA’s Farm and Homestead Day to explore the critical role of salt in transforming raw ingredients into flavorful, preserved, and nutritious foods. Whether you are submerging vegetables in brine or kneading dough, salt is your primary tool for safety, texture, and flavor. We’ll also make sourdough flatbreads!


Kvass Fermentation Workshop and Community Potluck

Join Maine Ferments for a potluck followed by a hands-on workshop exploring kvass, a traditional fermented beverage with roots in Eastern European food preservation practices. Participants will learn accessible fermentation techniques using bread, seasonal fruit, or root vegetables, and create their own batch to take home.

This free community workshop combines practical skill-building with shared meals, fostering food literacy and strengthening connections within Maine’s local food community. All experience levels welcome.

The Fermentation Festival is an annual celebration of fermented food in Maine. Come experience the flavor explosion and multi-cultural traditions of fermentation through workshops, demonstrations, vendors, samples, culture swapping, and ferment judging.
